-
ROOKIE COUNTRY OF THE YEAR: West Germany supplied the Masters
- golf and Wimbledon tennis champions, Bernhard Langer and Boris
- Becker, plus two N.B.A. first-rounders, Detlef Schrempf and Uwe
- Blab. Becker, 18, brought a new phrase to the tennis court:
- enfant wonderful.
-

-
OLDEST ENFANT TERRIBLE: Slipping to No. 2 behind Ivan Lendl,
- John McEnroe momentarily acknowledged doubt and age, as if
- starting to grow both up and old at 26. But he closed his
- tennis year caterwauling again in Australia.
-

-
LEAST ROMANTIC HORSE: Kentucky Derby Winner Spend a Buck took
- the money and ran to New Jersey.
-

-
SMALLEST FOOTBALL COACH: Jimmy Johnson of the University of
- Miami kept kicking Notre Dame's Gerry Faust, 58-7, after he was
- not only down but out.
-

-
CLASSIC HITS, RUNS: Pete Rose's 4,l92nd, Rod Carew's 3,000th,
- Tom Seaver's and Phil Niekro's 300th, Rusty Staub's last.
- George Brett finally had his world stage: Kansas City came back
- from 3-1 twice.
-

-
AND ERRORS: Baseball struck itself for two days but was
- lambasted for weeks in a drug trial. Billy Martin found himself
- in a sling again after another barroom brawl. St. Louis fouled
- its splendid season, and after 41 wins in two years, Joaquin
- Andujar was traded.
-

-
MOST POIGNANT KNOCKOUT: Overreaching for Rocky Marciano's 49-0
- record, Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes lost everything with
- one slur.
-

-
FULLEST BASKETS: Villanova's smiling sharpshooters won a
- national basketball title that touched even Georgetown. Kareem
- Abdul-Jabbar lifted himself and the Los Angeles Lakers to an
- amazing height at 38. Point shavers rubbed out Tulane.
-

-
MOST CHECKERED FLAGS: Racing cheered a speeding playboy, Indy
- 500 Winner Danny Sullivan. Hockey buried a playboy speeder,
- Philadelphia Flyers Goalie Pelle Lindbergh.
-

-
HUGEST IMPACT: The Chicago Bears have manhandled the N.F.L.,
- but William Perry has moved the country. If there were two
- athletes of the year, the Refrigerator might be both.
